What is DIRECT ACCESS Physical Therapy?

At David Gilboe & Associates Physical and Occupational Therapy, we believe getting the care you need should be straightforward, supportive, and centered on you. That is why we offer DIRECT ACCESS Physical Therapy, giving you a quicker path to care when something does not feel right or when you want to move more confidently.

What is DIRECT ACCESS?

DIRECT ACCESS means you can receive a Physical Therapy evaluation and treatment without first needing a physician referral or prescription. If you are experiencing pain, stiffness, weakness, or changes in how you move—or if you simply want to be proactive about your health—you can start with us right away.

Why DIRECT ACCESS matters

Beginning Physical Therapy sooner can help reduce delays in care and get you treatment faster. DIRECT ACCESS allows our Physical Therapists to assess what is going on, guide you safely, and help you move forward with a clear plan. It is also a great option for people who want to prevent injuries, improve movement, or stay active and independent.

Who can use DIRECT ACCESS?

Some common reasons patients choose DIRECT ACCESS include:

• Treatment for a recent or recurrent musculoskeletal injury

• Improving posture or home-office ergonomics

• Preparing for a vacation, long walks, or increased activity

• Training safely for sports or recreational activities

• Learning safer ways to lift, carry, or care for children

• Starting or refining a fitness or exercise program

How does insurance work with DIRECT ACCESS?

Insurance coverage for DIRECT ACCESS Physical Therapy can vary depending on your specific plan. In Michigan, some plans cover services for DIRECT ACCESS, while other plans may still require a physician prescription. Self-pay options are also available if you prefer to get started without delay. Our team at David Gilboe & Associates is happy to help you understand your options, or you may choose to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm coverage.

How long can I receive care through DIRECT ACCESS?

Under Michigan law, patients may receive Physical Therapy through DIRECT ACCESS for up to 10 visits or 21 days (whichever comes first). If continued care is needed beyond that point, we will help coordinate the next steps with your physician.

How do I get started?

Getting started is easy. If you or someone you care about is experiencing pain, having difficulty with daily movement, planning for an activity, or simply want expert guidance on staying active and well, know that we are here. When you call to schedule an appointment, our staff will check your benefits and let you know the steps to take to get started. At your scheduled appointment, you will meet with a licensed Physical Therapist who will listen carefully and create a personalized plan tailored to your goals.

You don’t have to wait to take care of your body. We are here to make your care simple and easy!
