Are Balance Problems Just a Part of Aging?
As spring approaches, many of us begin spending more time outside walking, gardening, or travelling. Activities that once felt effortless – walking on uneven ground, turning while walking, or carrying groceries – may begin to feel less stable or more challenging. While these changes are common, they are not something you have to accept. Balance can be improved, and physical therapy plays a key role in helping identify these issues and improve confidence with balance to maintain your independence.
As we age, changes occur in multiple body systems that can affect your balance. Even small declines in these areas can alter your balance. These changes include:
↓ strength
↓ reaction time
↓ sensation
↓ mobility
↓ vision
↓ posture control
↓ single leg stability
Challenges with balance are not only limited to seniors. Athletes recovering from injury, adults who spend long hours sitting, individuals experiencing dizziness, and people returning to activity after surgery or illness can experience issues with balance. Even though balance can decline in these situations, it is a skill that can be strengthened and improved at nearly any stage of life. Like flexibility or strength, balance responds to the right kind of training.
A good way to screen your balance is standing on one leg. At home, stand in front of the kitchen counter. Try to stand on one leg without holding on, but use your hand support if needed to prevent yourself from losing your balance. If you are unable to hold this position for at least 10 seconds, you will want to consider a balance program focusing on single limb stability.
Many people assume they should only seek help after experiencing a fall. In most cases, balance training is most effective when started proactively. Over the past four decades, our recovery team at David Gilboe & Associates has helped thousands of patients improve their stability, mobility, and confidence through personalized care. Our approach combines careful movement evaluation, hands-on techniques, and targeted exercises designed to strengthen the body’s natural balance systems.
If you—or someone you care about—are noticing challenges with balance, we encourage you to reach out to request an evaluation. The Gilboe team is always happy to provide guidance, support, and care.
